The most stunning Loire Valley castles are within a two-hour drive of your prestigious holiday rental property.
- Cheverny: Cheverny castle is the mostly impressively furnished of all the Loire Valley castles. Built in the 17th century, it boasts six themed gardens and features styles that span a range of colours and eras. Tintin fans will recognize a likeness with the Chateau de Moulinsart in the comic book series by Hergé – for good reason, as the fictional castle was inspired by Cheverny. And if you’re not familiar with the Adventures of Tintin don’t worry – the permanent exhibition at the castle will fill you in.
- Chambord: the largest Loire Valley castle, with no less than 426 rooms and 7 hectares of grounds in the largest closed forest domain in Europe. Chambord epitomizes the French Renaissance style and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Expect jaw-dropping architecture, fabulous interiors and idyllic gardens.
French king Louis 14th was a regular visitor here and it is the only royal estate to remain intact since it was built.
- Blois: Blois castle is a stunning sight, and its walls demonstrate the evolution of architectural styles between the 13th and 17th centuries. It was a favourite address of kings and queens during the Renaissance period, hence its reputation as a royal castle. It houses over 35 000 unique period items and is classed as a Museum of France.
Little known to international visitors, Sologne is one of France’s hidden gems. With over 3,000 ponds and lakes and 485,000 hectares of unspoilt countryside, it’s ideal for an idyllic rural getaway. The famous apple-based Tarte Tatin was created here. Other specialities include melt-in-the-mouth Sablés de Nançay butter biscuits and goat’s cheese from Selles-sur-Cher. Visit the largest local town, Romorantin, where Léonard de Vinci planned to build his Ideal City. His drawings for the city are said to have inspired the design of Chambord castle.
- Sancerre (30km): this medieval town is classed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Admire the Tour des Fiefs tower that still stands from the 10th century castle and follow the 28 locations on the Fil d’Ariane discovery trail around the town to see the sights and learn about its past. Sancerre is famous for its prestigious Sauvignon Blanc wine, also known as Sancerre Blanc, and its Crottin de Chavignol goat’s cheese. Both are Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée certified and a must during your time here.
- Bourges (37km) : another lovely medieval town steeped in history, Bourges is home to France’s largest cathedral. Go up to the top for amazing views. Also visit the Maison de Jacques Cœur – he was treasurer to French king Charles VII – and the Marais de Bourges, one of the few produce-growing marshlands in France. On summer nights the town comes alive with Les Nuits Lumières, a light show that illuminates buildings to tell the tale of the town’s past.
- Pouilly-sur-Loire (45km): wine connoisseurs will delight in sipping a fresh crisp Pouilly Fumé by the banks of the Loire. Visit a wine estate for a tour of the vineyards and a tasting session, then take a bottle home to enjoy at your château. Pouilly Fumé pairs perfectly with seafood, chicken or the local Crottin de Chavignol goat’s cheese.
