The Loire Valley is world-famous for its jaw-dropping concentration of magnificent castles. The closest to your holiday home are within a radius of an hour and twenty minutes, in Sully-sur-Loire, Chambord and Blois.
- Sully-sur-Loire (30 km): dating back to 1395, this is one of the most prestigious castles in France, with beautiful medieval fortresses and a stunning water-filled moat. Famous historical guests in the 17th century included King Louis 14th the illustrious writer and philosopher Voltaire.
- Chambord (65 km): a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Château de Chambord is one of the most grandiose castles in the region, frequently seen on postcards. With 426 rooms and seven hectares of magnificently manicured gardens, it has a feel of Versailles. Louis 14th the Sun King also stayed at Chambord.
- Blois (75 km): the Royal Château of Blois demonstrates the evolution of French architecture from the 13th to the 17th century, after a succession 7 Kings and 10 Queens left their mark on the building during the Renaissance era. Today, it houses 300 prestigious period works in the Musée des Beaux-arts.
- Sologne: with over 3,000 ponds and 485,000 hectares, the rural region of Sologne is one of the best-preserved forest regions in France, yet least known by visitors to France. The region’s capital, Romorantin, inspired the design of Leonardo da Vinci’s Ideal City project undertaken with Francis I. Da Vinci’s drawings then inspired the architecture of Chambord. The Sologne region is a terroir of excellence. Savour Tarte Tatin, rondiaux beignets, sablé de Nançay butter biscuits, and Selles-sur-Cher goat’s cheese.
- La Route Jacques Cœur: named after the French merchant Jacques Cœur from Bourges, this 180-km itinerary takes inseven7 towns and villages and thirteen sites worth seeing. All contribute to the hidden treasures of the region with their strong cultural heritage.
- Aubigny-sur-Nère (20 km): a beautiful village full of character, Aubigny-sur-Nère is located in rural Berry, between the Sologne and Sancerre regions. It has Scottish heritage and is known as the City of the Stuarts due to medieval links between French and Scottish royalty. During the Hundred Years' War, French King Charles VII granted lordship of the village to John Stuart, Constable of the Scottish army. The village produces a Franco-Scottish whisky named The Aubigny Auld Alliance. Joint festivities are held here every year, with a Scottish market and bagpipe parades.
- Sancerre (60 km): voted preferred village of the French people in 2021 and one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France in 2022, Sancerre is a medieval village with beautiful hill views. Jacques Cœur (of the Jacques Coeur Route mentioned above) lived here for a while. Sancerre is famous for its wine, with vineyards covering more than 3,000 hectares. Sancerre is a prestigious white wine that pairs perfectly with a seafood platter, fish-based dish, or the famous Crottin de Chavignol goat’s cheese.
- Bourges (68 km): capital of the Berry region, Bourges is popular for its medieval atmosphere. The streets are lined with timber-framed houses that lead to Bourges Cathedral. It boasts the largest Gothic exterior in Europe and 37-metre-high vaults inside. In summer, visitors can enjoy Les Nuits Lumière, a night-time light show projected onto iconic monuments for an entertaining recital of the city's history (from May to September and from Thursday to Saturday).
