This fabulous rental castle in south-west France has retained all its history and character while being fully refurbished. All fourteen bedrooms are bright, spacious and adorned with original features. Recent renovations have enhanced the exquisite period features such as the wooden panelling, original floors and ornamental gold cornices and window fittings and decorative fireplaces while bringing in a fresh and uplifting new style with swish new bathrooms and carefully selected furnishings.
At the top of a sweeping tree-lined drive, this majestic property welcomes guests into a grand hallway that set the scene for what’s to come; chandelier light fittings, moulded ceilings, wood panelling and period furniture. The ground floor is designed for socialising, with no less than three reception rooms or lounges and a spacious 60 m² dining room. One of the lounges can be used as a bedroom for guests with reduced mobility if required. The dining room includes a music alcove with a piano, and leads outside to a sweeping staircase down to the garden and the pool. The kitchen is equipped for catering for groups and has two dishwashers and two range cookers with twelve hobs in total.
A grand staircase leads past a landing with leaded windows up to the first floor where there are six spacious bedrooms, all with their own en-suite bathroom. The master suite has an outdoor balcony overlooking the garden. The rooms exude simple sophistication, with white walls that reflect the natural light flooding in from tall windows and offset the wooden parquet flooring and carefully curated pieces of period furniture. The en-suite bathrooms have natural lighting, pure lines and modern fittings. Continuing up to the second floor, there are five more double bedrooms, all en-suite with either a bathtub or shower.
On the top floor, the attic has been converted into a self-contained apartment with its own kitchen, a living room with two sofa beds, two double bedrooms and a bathroom. This separate apartment would be ideal for a family with young children, teenagers who want their own space, or guests who prefer the freedom of being self-sufficient.
This holiday chateau is set in a vast leafy garden on the site of a former arboretum. Many trees are still in place including some relatively rare species. At the foot of the outdoor staircase is a large 16x8 metre swimming pool with a generous decking area with hammocks and sun loungers where guests can relax and enjoy the setting. There is also a table tennis table, perfect for organising tournaments to while away the sunny afternoons.
As its name suggests, Chateau Midi Pyrenees is situated in the south west region of France near the Pyrenees mountains. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the rural location, with natural parks, forests, lakes and mountains on the doorstep. And yet the property is secluded but not isolated. A lively village with shops, restaurants and amenities is just a couple of miles down the road and a five-minute drive away. The Midi Pyrenees region is a nature lover’s paradise. Away from the hustle and bustle of the coast and big cities, life here revolves around nature the seasons.
There are several natural parks in the region, the nearest being the Ariège Pyrénées regional park. The Pyrenees mountains are on the doorstep. In winter, the nearest ski resort is just half an hour’s drive and in summer there are walks and hikes galore to be enjoyed. Some lakes can be hiked to, while others such as Bethmale or Montbel are accessible by road. The Ars waterfall is located within the park and is a great place to trek to. Park at the village of Aulus-les-Bains and follow a woodland walk through forests and streams to a magnificent three-tier waterfall. Allow 45 minutes for the drive there and 3.5 hours for the walk. Take good walking shoes, refreshments and your camera for the seriously Instagrammable views !
The Midi Pyrenees region is filled with beautiful historic villages with mediaeval castles, prehistoric caves, fabulous hilltop views and delicious specialities.
Saint Lizier is the nearest to your holiday castle, just a five minute drive away, and is officially named as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages. Walk up to the Bishop’s Palace on the hill to admire France’s answer to the Sistine Chapel; ancient frescos were recently discovered inside the chapel and have been spruced up to reveal their stunning quality. You’ll also get an amazing view of the village and the valley below. Wander through the cobbled streets, taste the local Croustade millefeuille fruit pie, or enjoy a top notch meal at a restaurant. We recommend Le Carré d’Ange and L’Auberge d’Antan.
Foix is a 45 minute drive and a popular sight in the South West. Follow in the footsteps of the last crusaders as you climb up to the Chateau de Montégur. This hilltop fortress dates back to the year 1,000 and offered refuge to the persecuted Cathars in the 13th century. It’s now a museum.
Cazères is a pretty villages on the banks of the Garonne river. Enjoy a boat trip along the river or a spot of fishing. While away the hours listening to the lapping water and the chirping cicadas or follow a waymarked path that will take you on a three-hour walk around the town.
Lourdes – a little further afield, about 1.5 hour’s drive, is the pilgrimage site of Lourdes. Legend has it that this is where Our Lady of Lourdes appeared to a young French peasant girl named Bernadette in 1858. Believers have flocked here ever since searching for cures and miracles. The water is said to have healing properties and Catholic masses are held several times a day in different languages.

October 2024 / Few days stay: "Our stay at the villa was fantastic. Delivered on all accounts."
Annie C. (France), 27/08/2021
Translated from French / August 2021 / 10 day-stay : "We really enjoyed our stay at the chateau even the weather was not so good this summer but nobody is responsible for that! Everything went well and we appreciated the kindness and helpfulness of the manager of the property. We travelled around the region by bike or by car. All the guests loved the surroundings and Ariege as much as the chateau that was renovated with delicacy."
