The term château is used to refer two things in France; it can mean an architectural building, but can also be used in a wider sense to mean a wine estate. In the wine world, the château appellation is awarded to good quality wine produced on a specific plot, rather than the presence of a prestigious building – technically, there doesn’t have to be a castle there at all.
