The Périgord region is divided into four areas, each named after a colour. Here’s how they got their names:
Périgord Noir (black Périgord): this is the most historic name, which comes from the dark bark of theholm oak trees that are prevalent in the region.
Périgord Blanc (white Périgord): named after the chalk plains in the middle of the Dordogne.
Périgord Vert (green Périgord): rumour has it that this area was christened by Jules Verne and itreflects the lush green countryside.
Périgord Pourpre (purple Périgord): much debated, this relatively new name was thought up as amarketing ploy. It is named purple after the colour of the grapes grown in the area’s vineyards.
