San Juan festival – from the 23rd to the 24th of June, this festival features music and bonfires. In Alicante, giant papier-mâché statues, notably representing politicians and celebrities, travel through the streets before being burned and a show of bangers precedes a fireworks display for an explosive celebration.
Moros y Cristianos – these festivals commemorate the battles between the Christian and Muslim populations. Groups sporting colourful costumes symbolically take control of the town, an artificial castle must be conquered and battles and parades set the rhythm of these almost historical re-enactments. They take place at different times depending on where in Costa Blanca they’re celebrated: from March to December.
Semana Santa – This traditional religious festival continues to endure in Spain during Easter celebrations. Again, parades of traditional costumes travel through the main cities, accompanied by music rooted in history.
