The Costa Blanca is famous for its sunny Mediterranean climate, its beaches and coves with turquoise waters, and its festive atmosphere. However, the region also boasts stunning mountainous landscapes and historic villages. And it's all on the doorstep of Costa Blanca By the Bay.
Sand seekers will love the fact that this seaside rental property is just two kilometres from the beach. The nearest seaside resort has long beaches of fine sand with clean, clear and calm waters, which have been awarded Blue Flag or Tourism quality status. They are lively family beaches with all the facilities you need: toilets and showers, lifeguard, shops and restaurants, plus plenty of water sports such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and jet skiing. The beaches have the convenience of a city location coupled with a beautiful view of the 330-metre-high Penon de Ifach rock formation and natural park, typical of the Costa Blanca landscape.
There is no shortage of wilder and more secluded spots along the Costa Blanca too. The coastline is dotted with an array of romantic coves for a more peaceful way to explore the Mediterranean Sea and discover its underwater delights. Whether you snorkel or dive, the Costa Blanca is full of colourful treasures just waiting to be revealed. Check out Penyal cove, which can be accessed from the Penon de Ifach, El Raco or Les Bassetes.
For an inland adventure, the nearby mountains are a great place to head to. It’s hard to imagine that there is such a different landscape and experience to be enjoyed less than an hour from the hustle and bustle of the coast. A whole host of natural parks are full of beautiful unspoiled nature that lends itself to a different kind of outdoor activity. Walk, hike and explore to your heart’s content.
The Serra de Bèrnia i Ferrer mountain range, about 20 km from Costa Blanca By the Bay, is a four-hour hike away and features a mixture of arid and lush landscapes, with breathtaking views.
Las Fuentas del Algar is a natural wetland with spectacular waterfalls and rock pools. It forms a turquoise and green oasis and makes a lovely walk to cool down. It is a total change of scenery. We recommend continuing on from here up to Guadalest.
For a more challenging hike, seasoned walkers can head to Barranc de l'Infern and its canyons, which are only 30 km from the villa. This is not suitable for children or inexperienced walkers, however.
The Serra Gelada Nature Park brings you closer to the Mediterranean and links land and sea. It is the only park in the independent province of Valencia that covers both land and sea. The cliffs that plunge into the sea can be explored on foot (or by bike) or from the sea, by sailing, kayaking or paddling from Altea.
Altea is one of the towns that makes the Costa Blanca so delightful. It is wedged between the inland hills and the sea, with a breathtaking panorama of each. The old town is particularly worth a visit for its historic monuments, restaurants and shops along the white-fronted streets.
Calpe is a more vibrant and colourful town, with just as much history to its name. Traces of the Roman and mediaeval periods can still be seen at the Los Baños de Reina (the Queen's Baths) archaeological site, in the remains of the wall that protected the town from Muslim attacks, or the 15th-century church. Visit the History and Archaeology Museum to get a feel for the town’s culture and its past. Then stroll through the streets and squares with their colourful facades and admire the staircases and frescoes as you choose a restaurant for a well-earned meal. Festivals are organised throughout the year, especially in July and August. The Feria Andaluza, or Andalusian Fair, is held at the beginning of July, while the festival of the patron saint of the sea, the Virgen del Carmen, takes place on 16 July. The Virgen de las Nieves – Virgin of the Snows – is celebrated at the end of July or the beginning of August, depending on the year. These festivities draw crowds and include processions, parades, concerts, fireworks, and night-time dancing. There is also a good selection of bars and nightclubs not far from the property.
