La Rochelle International Film Festival – This festival has hosted films from all over the world since it began in 1973. It’s a major event in filmmaking circles and for 10 days at the beginning of July, La Rochelle sees a frenzy of screenings and meetings. The festival wraps up in style with a five-film all-nighter followed by breakfast by the harbour as the sun comes up.
Francofolies – Another July event which has musicians flocking to La Rochelle. The hottest groups and singers of the moment perform across ten stages at this festival where famous headline acts perform alongside an impressive clutch of up-and-coming artists. It’s been going strong for 30 years and it’s easy to see why!
Grand Pavois – The Grand Pavois, is a 100,000 m² boat show. Hundreds of boats are displayed and just as many brands from all over the world come to showcase their latest products throughout September.
Vendée Globe – The Vendée Globe is only held once every four years, and usually leaves in November. This solo, non-stop, around the world sailing race is particularly gruelling and it starts and finishes in Les Sables-d’Olonne. If you’re lucky enough to be there at the right time, you’ll love the vibrant celebratory atmosphere that takes over the town.
