Welcome to Bourgogne – the French name for this prestigious wine region, and the only one to translate its name in other languages. Known in English as Burgundy, the region counts 3,800 estates spread over 250 km from Chablis in the north to Mâcon in the south. It’s the second largest wine region in France, after Bordeaux.
Burgundy wines are divided into four appellations: Regional (50% of production), Villages (40%), Premiers crus (10%) and Grands crus (1%).
Burgundy Luxury Retreat is right in the heart of the Bourgogne Côte d'Or area. Take the car and head off to explore the surrounding vineyards that produce Chablis, Pommard, Meursault, Nuits-Saint-Georges and Gevrey-Chambertin wines.
Visit the town of Beaune. The Hospices de Beaune hosts the world's most famous charity wine auction, held on the third Sunday in November since 1859, where prestigious Premiers Cru wines are sold to the highest bidder.
While you’re there, visit the Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne. The term climat is specific to Burgundy and refers to a particular plot, grape variety and know-how. The Burgundy climats are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Three towns – Chablis, Beaune and Mâcon – have a Cité des Climats visitor centre that offer tours and fun wine-related activities to learn about winemaking, similar to the Cité des Vins in Bordeaux.
To get out and about, Burgundy also has not one, but six wine routes you can follow: choose from the Grands Crus, Crémant, Grands Vins, Yonne, Mâconnais-Beaujolais and Pouilly-Sancerre itineraries.
Burgundy also boasts a wealth of cultural sites, including castles, monasteries, museums and medieval villages. The region played an important part in the history of France, and was part of a golden era that is reflected in its châteaux.
Château de Savigny-Lès-Beaune, 20 kilometres from your holiday property, is a 14th-century castle, winery and open-air aeronautical museum with the largest collection of fighter planes in the world.
Château de Germolles (20 km) was the home of the Dukes of Burgundy and is very well preserved.
Further afield (60 km), visit the elegant 17th-century castle in Cormatin with its beautiful gardens or the 12th-century Châteauneuf castle in Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, considered to be one of the last remaining examples of 14th-century military architecture.
In Dijon (60 km), the Musée de la Vie Bourguignonne recounts life in Burgundy over the last few centuries. Dijon is dubbed the city of a hundred bell towers for its many abbeys and churches, such as Saint-Bénigne cathedral and Notre-Dame church.
Halfway between Dijon and Burgundy Luxury Retreat is Cîteaux Abbey (35 km). Located in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côte-d'Or, Cîteaux Abbey has been home to Cistercian monks for almost a thousand years and is definitely worth a visit. The abbey is open to the public and has films and exhibitions to show what life in the monastery is like today. Visitors love its impressive 15th-century remains and restored cloister and library. The site is also famous for its delicious Cîteaux cheese, made by the abbey's monks.
