Villa Family Style is a holiday home close to the sea, on the northern Basque Coast. It is a rocky coast popular for its surf-friendly waves and its chic seaside resorts, such as Anglet, Biarritz, Bidart, Guéthary, and Saint-Jean-de Luz. People come here for the beautiful sandy beaches, the Atlantic Ocean, and the wealth of water sports on offer, with surfing topping the list. The waves of the Basque Coast are world famous. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert there are plenty of surf clubs to choose from within a few kilometres of your rental villa. Teenagers will be in their element, whether they’re out on a board or just rolling in the waves and swimming. Not all beaches are suitable for the whole family, however. For children and less adventurous adults, head to the more sheltered beaches such as the Port-Vieux beach in Biarritz. Families can also take a sail boat out on the Bay of Biscay to see the coast from a different angle, after boarding in Anglet. Again, you can pick from a novice or advanced courses. For beginners, the sea is less rough in the south, near Ciboure. More activities include paddle boarding, windsurfing, jet-ski, wave-ski, flyboarding, flyfishing and sea kayaking. There are also thalassotherapy centres (Biarritz, Anglet) and casinos (Saint-Jean de Luz, Biarritz). This is also a great spot for shopping: the area has a thriving craft industry. The Don Quichosse espadrilles centre in Mauléon-Licharre and the Lartigue workshop in Ascain can be visited in season.
Beyond the beaches and surf spots of the Atlantic coast, lies a picturesque hinterland with picture-perfect landscapes and villages. The Pyrenees mountain landscape peaks with the Rhune summit, at an altitude of 900 metres. The flora and fauna here are generous and varied across the rocky passes, forests and moors. See if you can spot birds of prey, ewes and wild ponies (pattoks) along your walks, or from the little train of the Rhune, which has to be booked in advance. Many traditional Basque villages deserve a stopover: Ainhoa, Ascain, Espelette, Ixtassou, Sare, Saint-Jean-Pied de Port, Cambo les Bains and its thermal baths, and Saint Pée sur Nivelle and its lake. You will see the Labourdine houses everywhere, with their green, red or blue colours that create a unique and recognisable décor that never gets old. In Sare, you can visit Villa Ortillopitz, a traditional 17th century house. The same architecture is found over the border in the Spanish Basque Country once you venture past Hendaye.
The Basque Country extends into Spain, on the other side of the Pyrenees. The border, Hendaye, is only about 30 kilometres from your holiday rental. The French Basque Country and the Spanish Basque Country have the same identity. Mountainous landscapes, rocky coasts and beaches, colourful villages such as Fontarrabie, traditional dancing, Basque pelota, a shared language and culinary specialities are inherent to both regions. The Spanish Basque Country is well-known for the Guggenheim Modern Art Museum in Bilbao.
France is famous for its food, and nowhere so much as the south-west: make sure you sample the delicious Bayonne ham, Espelette chilli pepper, Ossau Iraty sheep's cheese, Ixtassou black cherries w which are used for Basque cake, Irouleguy wines, and Sagarno cider. The excellent local ingredients grown in the southern sun are used to make the traditional dishes of the region, including Piperade, Basque chicken, and axhoa.
