Villa Bonheur du Gers: A family-friendly holiday home in south west France

A beautiful setting

This old stone country home enjoys idyllic views of the surrounding hills, the nearby medieval village and a castle, beautifully set off by the mesmerising light here which flits and changes throughout the day. The area has a Tuscan feel to it, with hills and vineyards dotted with small hamlets of stone and pink-tiled homes and medieval constructions. Enjoy the luxury of a rural location while being just 15 minutes from a lively historic village with all amenities.

A one-of-a-kind holiday home

This former farmhouse was recently renovated to a very high standard. What used to be a workshop has been transformed into beautiful living spaces. The interior is all about rustic elegance, with a mix of English, French and industrial styles.

Villa Bonheur du Gers comprises two original buildings which are joined by a glass-fronted hallway. The main living areas are situated on one side and the bedrooms and an area designed for youngsters on the other.

This countryside holiday home has been designed with families in mind. It can sleep up to fourteen guests and has seven bedrooms and four bathrooms.

The house is entered through the glass hallway at the rear, and the rooms are laid out in a row.

The dining room is in between the living room and the kitchen and features the same appealing mix of styles and periods, with Victorian-inspired chandeliers, metal chairs and a plant-print wall covering. The main feature is a long table that seats fourteen and is perfect for enjoying meals together.

The local culture in south-west France revolves around food and the finer things in life, and the kitchen is the hub of the home. You have everything you need to cater for your group, with a large central island, two five-ring induction hobs and an American fridge with an ice machine. There is a second fridge in the utility room. And because life here is lived outdoors, there are also cooking facilities under the veranda by the pool.

This rental villa has three double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on the ground floor and four double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on the first floor. We recommend using the upstairs rooms for children or teenagers.

A villa rental great for families with teenagers

The beauty of this villa is that it has two lounges – one for adults and one for games. Teenagers will love having their own space to hang out. The split-level games area has comfy sofas, table football and table tennis downstairs, and a mezzanine upstairs for quieter activities like board games, reading, watching films (TV and DVD player) and video games. There is even an X-Box console and Wi-Fi – we told you that teenagers would love it! But they won’t be stuck inside all of the time either – with an array of outdoor facilities, there will be no complaints of being bored. Which means the adults get to relax and enjoy their holiday too.

Your French holiday cottage with a private pool and outdoor kitchen

The garden is designed to make the most of the South of France sunshine and the leisurely lifestyle that goes with it.

The pool takes centre stage. With a depth of 1.6m, it’s great for older children who can dive in and have fun. The pool is close to the house and does not have a safety barrier, so we do not recommend this property for families with young children who cannot swim. Although the pool is fitted with a standard-compliant alarm, it is less reliable for pool safety peace of mind.

This spacious country home is perfect for an easy-going holiday with teens, with plenty of opportunities to keep busy or just laze around in the sun. There is an outdoor kitchen with a plancha grill in an adorable stone outhouse where you can prepare and enjoy al fresco meals together.

This villa can comfortably accommodate three families with children or teenagers or four couples.

The picturesque villages of the Gers

This villa is in the Gers area of south-west France, which is part of the wider Occitanie region. The area has a fascinating history and is known for its food, wine and slow-paced living.

Venture out from the villa to discover the many old villages that dot the countryside:

Lectoure – take a guided tour to learn about the town’s past. There’s plenty to see, including the town centre, the private mansions, the Gothic-style Saint-Gervais cathedral and the Sacred Art museum, and the medieval tower. Follow the arts and craft trail, climb up to the cathedral bell tower, visit the castle of the Counts of Armagnac, and take part in a torchlit tour of the ramparts or a storytelling walk.  Lectoure is also known for its thermal baths.

L'Isle-Bouzon is worth a visit for its viewpoint alone, while its neighbouring village Saint-Clar has a mystery trail based on the local specialities such as garlic growing.

Space buffs should visit the town of Fleurance which has its own astronomy festival to observe the night sky. It is also popular or its market, held on Tuesday mornings under the arcades.

Toulouse: the pink city

Toulouse is a must-see city and well worth the 90-minute drive. Known as the pink city because of the colour of the local walls, it’s lovely to visit and has a lively buzz. Teens and adults alike will love the Cité de l'Espace space centre.

Aqualand

The Aqualand water park is about 50 kilometres from the villa, and a guaranteed fun family day out!
