Tamariu, a quaint old fishing village that is a delight to discover and the perfect place to unwind. With its white houses and crystal-clear waters, this village offers a heavenly setting with all the charm of bygone times. The village is surrounded by leafy hills dotted with tamarind trees and beauty spots unspoilt by modern buildings and tourism. Tamariu has only one beach but plenty of creeks and coves such as Aigua Xelida.
Llafranc, a former fishing village, is now a popular spot for visitors. The Llafranc seafront, Paseo de Cypsele, is a tree-lined promenade with a great selection of bars, restaurants, ice cream parlours and shops. Llafranc is a very family-friendly town. The Sant Sebastià mountain, located to the left of the town, protects the beach on windy days. Behind the port, the smugglers’ path leads to Tamariu, taking in the Sant Sebastià lighthouse and Pedrosa cove on the way.
Begur is a charming medieval village, with a lofty castle that dominates the surrounding area. It has lots of colonial-style Indian houses and stately homes, and the old fishermen's neighbourhood has become a popular tourist spot along the seafront. This area includes Aiguablava, home of the majestic Aiguablava Parador and a small marina, and Sa Tuna beach, a small, rugged cove and suntrap.
Calella de Palafrugell is a typical Spanish village. It is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia and has a pretty display of white houses and cobbled streets. The harbour is filled with little wooden fishing boats in the port and there are lots of cute little creeks and coves that are ideal for a spot of sunbathing.
Further down the coast is the small village of Tossa de Mar, reputed for its medieval walls that flank the coastline. It has a wealth of old buildings and visitors will enjoy meandering along the steep streets and scenic coves, cliffs, pine forests and beaches. French artist Marc Chagall was inspired by this village, which he fondly dubbed “blue paradise”.
Head inland to the picturesque hillside village of Pals, whose historic centre has retained all its original charm. Food and cultural events are held here all year round against a stunning backdrop. Wander through the village and look up to admire beautiful architectural features such as Roman arches and picturesque doorways, with colourful flowers adorning the stone walls.
The quality of the water in this part of Spain lends itself perfectly to a wide range of watersports such as diving, snorkelling and kayaking.
Get out in nature and explore the local area by horse riding, cycling or walking. There is no shortage of trails that lead to secret spots and hidden places that you can’t get to by car.
Golfers will be delighted by the many golf courses that the Costa Brava has to offer, including the Aro Golf Club, 300 metres above the sea, and the Costa Brava Golf Club.
For the ultimate holiday experience, you can take to the skies in a hot air balloon ride for an exciting experience and unrivalled aerial views of the Costa Brava.
Traditional Catalan foods and drinks to try include fideuá, xurros, crema catalana, horchata, and Castelló d'Empúries biscuits to name but a few. Seafood and inland products are in plentiful supply and definitely worth discovering !
