L'Ile aux Oiseaux and the tchanquées fishing huts: l'Ile aux Oiseaux, or island of birds, is close to your holiday home, in Arcachon Bay.
From the Bélisaire jetty, take a traditional "pinasse" boat and set off to explore the nature of the island.
Check the tide tables before you go and leave at high tide to get as close as possible to the famous stilted huts. This island is popular with birdwatchers, who can spot more than 150 species of bird, including the little egret, kingfisher, white-mirrored blue-throat and reed bunting.
The Cap Ferret headland and lighthouse: from the top of its 57 metres, this listed lighthouse offers a 360° view of the Dune du Pilat, the Mimbeau inlet and the oyster beds. A well-deserved reward for climbing the 253 steps! As well as the view, the visit includes interactive exhibition areas (map room, navigation room) and a shop.
Oyster-farming villages: Arcachon Bay is dotted with these picturesque villages. Le Mimbeau, with the Dune du Pilat in the background, and the village of L'Herbe are just two worth seeing. Stop off at one of the colourful oyster huts and sample the region’s delicacy at the water’s edge.
For waves and the deep blue sea, head to the large sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean side of the peninsula, home to some of France’s top surf spots. The Petit Nice and Lagune beaches at La Teste de Buch are among the most popular in Cap Ferret.
On the other side of the peninsula, 20 kilometres of coastline and 15 beaches hug the bay, lined with the villages of Claouey, Petit Piquey, and Le Canon, culminating with the lighthouse beach Le Phare near the tip of the land.
For safe family fun, there are lots of swimming pools for children, such as at Le Teich and Audenge.
Leave the car at home and get on your bike. With more than 300 kilometres of cycle paths, the Arcachon basin embraces new leisure trends and is perfectly suited to bike rides. Cycle paths, traffic zones and bike-friendly infrastructures are all listed on a regularly-updated app, making cycling a breeze.
Dune du Pilat and La Teste de Buch: facing the Atlantic Ocean, the majestic Dune du Pilat is Europe’s highest sand dune at a dizzying 103-metres high. It is a protected natural site covering almost seven hectares, and you can climb up to the top, while respecting this exceptional site and the biodiversity that surrounds it.
The town of La Teste de Buch boasts an oyster-farming port and one of the largest markets in the region.
Arcachon: a 30-minute ferry across the bay will take you to the mainland. You'll arrive on the other side to discover a more lively and urban atmosphere.
Visit neighbourhoods named after the seasons to discover Arcachon from four different angles: the town centre forms the Ville d’Eté (summer), with the Ville d’Automne (autumn) and its marina to the east. The Ville de Printemps (spring) covers a beautiful beach and the Abatilles and Moulleau districts. And the Ville d’Hiver (winter) is a residential neighbourhood.
