Demeure Sweet Gers is a fabulous large holiday rental in the French countryside. A property of this size right in the centre of a village is a rare find, making it special as well as stunning. With a large garden, private pool, and shops and restaurants on the doorstep, it’s ideal for groups and takes the headache out of organisation. Demeure Sweet Gers is beautiful inside and out, and ideal for enjoying nature without compromising on entertainment.
The Gers is a predominantly rural region, where 70% of the land is used for farming. Green, or slow tourism is something the area does well. This is a nature lovers’ paradise, where living is easy at the heart of France’s terroir.
Most of the Gers is countryside, with few built-up areas. However, there are a wealth of character-packed medieval villages and small historic towns, and this delightful property is in one of them. Time is something this medieval town has plenty of – life here is gentle and there is nothing to rush for. The Demeure Sweet Gers property dates back to the 18th century. It is a former mansion, built by a family’s town house as a display of wealth. Read on as we take you around your next holiday home in south-west France.
The nobility of the property has remained intact throughout its renovation, and it is still every ounce the elegant family home. The living areas on the ground floor are everything you would expect from a chic French abode, comprising a boudoir, a music room, a library and a beautiful dining room. Each room has its own purpose, as is typical of the period in which it was built: a time when grand properties moved away from the court life of previous centuries towards a lifestyle which favoured private quarters. The interior, however was clearly designed to portray the owner’s status. Ceilings are high, spaces are big, and the style is meticulous. The entrance hall is grandiose and welcoming. It leads to a grand staircase which sets the tone. The property has been upgraded but retains a period décor. Furniture, sculpted panels, lighting and other decorative elements are elegantly set off by the original woodwork, tiles, parquet floors and fireplaces.
The kitchen is delightfully rustic, with an authentic Lacanche range cooker that will appeal to culinary connoisseurs.
There are six suites, with a total of seven bedrooms (one suite has two bedrooms) and five bathrooms.
The house was originally divided into six apartments. Although it has now been opened up to become one home, it means that all guests enjoy maximum privacy and their own space.
Again, the rooms are all about height, space and delicate decoration. The result is simple yet sophisticated and promotes a feeling of well-being.
There is one suite on the ground floor, making it ideal for a multi-generational family holiday. It can be accessed from the living room and the garden (with steps) and includes a double bedroom and a bathroom with bath and shower.
On the first floor, there are five suites for a total capacity of thirteen people : a master suite of more than 60m² with a shower room; two double suites with their own shower room; a family suite for five people which has two bedrooms, one with three single beds and the other, up some stairs, with a double bed. Finally, two double rooms share a bathroom with bath and shower.
Outside, the garden and the pool provide a delightfully cool oasis hidden away in the heart of the medieval town.
One of the best things about this town house is it’s walled garden. Hidden from view, guests enjoy total privacy just a stone’s throw from the bustle of the village. The pool is the main feature of the garden, alongside outdoor dining and seating. The Orangerie has been converted into a summer dining room, ensuring an enchanting experience once night falls. Then move outside to enjoy the local digestif, Armagnac, around the firepit, while contemplating the view.
Demeure Sweet Gers can comfortably accommodate three to four families or five couples.
A concierge service is available (at an additional cost).

The Gers is flanked by two natural parks in neighbouring regions – the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park and the Causses Regional Natural Park and Geopark – and is soon have one of its own, the Astarac Regional Natural Park, as a way to highlight and preserve the beauty of the agricultural and tourist landscapes.
Get out and enjoy nature on foot or by bike. The Armagnac Greenway, starting from the small town where Demeure Sweet Gers is located, runs for 20 kilometres through forests, moors and farm fields, and offers a complete overview of the region's landscapes. The trail is very easy to walk and can be enjoyed by the whole family, with the beautiful views of the hills along the way.
Take to the water in a canoe on the Baïse, a safe and calm river. There is a canoe rental club five minutes’ walk from the property. Whether you choose to take a guided trip or go out on your own, as a leisurely family activity or something more challenging, it’s a great way to explore the area from a different angle.
Get an inside view of how the region’s outstanding food and wine is produced. Agritourism and wine tourism are combined. The Gers is the leading producer of sunflowers in France. The result is bright and beautiful landscapes as far as the eye can see. Swathes of golden fields that alternate with some 20,000 hectares of vineyards. Local drinks include Floc de Gascogne for the aperitif, Armagnac for the digestive, mostly white wines, and Côtes de Gascogne. Demeure Sweet Gers is surrounded by the Côtes de Condomois vineyards, used to make fruity white wines. A visit to the local distilleries and producers is a must, such as the Aurian house or Château Cugnac. Another major aspect of the farming here is ducks, used to make foie gras. The Gers is France’s second biggest producer of the iconic French culinary speciality. Other types of poultry are also produced here, along with Gascon beef, black pork, lamb, veal, goats’ and cows’ cheeses, Agen prunes, apples, honey, garlic, saffron, Tarbais beans, and Lectoure melons. You can buy all of these direct from the growers or at the day or night markets. There is a market on every day at one of the nearby villages – the nearest one to the house is on Wednesdays. The other local villages are always worth a visit in their own right though, for their vibrant atmosphere and historic remains.
The list of nearby towns and villages to visit is lengthy: choose from Larressingle, Condom, La Romieu, Valence sur Baïse, Villeneuve de Mezin, Montréal du Gers, Fourcès, Lavardens, Fleurance, Lectoure, Eauze and more. Stroll through the narrow streets of these ancient episcopal (Condom), military (Lavardens) or fortified villages (Larressingle). With no less than six villages labelled as the Most Beautiful Villages in France and four monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Gers is undoubtedly a historic destination.
