Off to Porto-Vecchio for your holidays? Then you’re in for a treat! South Corsica is a stunning corner of the world where you can take your pick of idyllic beaches with crystal-clear waters. But that’s not all Porto-Vecchio has to offer. Here’s our guide of the places you won’t want to miss.
Visit Porto-Vecchio
The old town of Porto-Vecchio a must, with its winding streets and stone buildings adorned with colourful shutters. The 16th-century citadel has an eventful past, having been destroyed and rebuilt three times. Take a guided tour to retrace the history of the city and its attacks, and don’t forget your camera – the views are amazing.
Santa Giulia bay
The beautiful Santa Giulia bay lies towards the south of the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio and is a nature-lover’s delight. Sitting at the foot the mountain is a turquoise lagoon that laps onto white sandy banks. Nearby is the Santa Giulia beach, a slice of paradise where the only decision you’ll have to make is whether to lie back and soak up the Mediterranean sun, or venture on to the water for a spot of water skiing, donut riding, snorkelling or a boat ride. Zonza
Next, we take a car and head to the hills north of Porto-Vecchio for a total change of scenery in Zonza. This village is 900 m above sea level in the heart of the Corsica natural park, offering unparalleled views of the Aiguilles de Bavella – the needle-tip peaks of the Bavella mountains over the valley. This village seems to be untouched by time with its old granite houses built onto rocks.
Palombaggia Beach
Just a short distance from Porto-Vecchio, Palombaggia Beach boasts the kind of crystalline waters, soft white sand and pine-grove shade that postcards are made of. It’s unarguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Corsica and stretches for more than a mile. It’s perfect for clearing the mind and filling the senses before strolling down to one of the little beach huts for a glass of something chilled against an idyllic backdrop.
Genoese towers
Genoese towers feature heavily in Corsica, a witness to the island’s history. They were built by the Republic of Genoa around 500 years to defend the island from barbarian invasions. The entire Corsican coastline is dotted with these towers, and Porto-Vecchio region is no exception. During your stay here, you will see the Fautéa tower which was restored after being attacked by the Turks, and the Pinarellu tower which was also rebuilt. A third tower, Rondinara, has never been restored and only its base is still in reasonably good condition.
