If south-west France is on your to-do list, and more particularly the Basque Country, then renting a luxury villa near Biarritz is a great way to do it. Enjoy discovering the wealth of attractions on offer in one of the Basque Country’s biggest towns. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Biarritz, read on!
The beaches
Among the obvious things to do in Biarritz is soaking up the sun on long stretches of sandy beaches in the South of France. Biarritz is where you’ll find the most famous of Basque Country beaches, the Grande Plage. Just a stone’s throw from the town centre, it’s dotted with brightly coloured tents and is supervised by lifeguards, so it’s great for families. If you’re looking for something a little more private though, then head to the rocky beach near the old harbour, where bathing is also supervised. After your dip, enjoy a drink outside the panoramic restaurant just above the beach.
Museums in Biarritz
If you’re looking for cooler and more cultural things to do in Biarritz, then the local museums are just the ticket. Pick from the Musée Historique de Biarritz which retraces 400 years of the town’s history; the Chocolate museum – sure to be a hit with the whole family; or the Asiatica museum which displays collections from all over Asia. There’s also the Bonnat-Helleu fine arts museum in nearby Bayonne, which is currently closed for renovation but worth bearing in mind in the future.
Biarritz aquarium
This is definitely one of the best things to do in Biarritz. The aquarium is a fabulous day out for families and draws in 200,000 visitors each year. It doubled in size after two years of extension works which were completed in 2011, growing from 3,500 m² to an impressive 7,000 m². There’s no better place than Biarritz aquarium to learn all about the species that live in the Bay of Biscay. It’s not limited to local sea life though; it also has 6 aquariums of animals from the North Atlantic Ocean, 12 pools of Caribbean species and 7 aquariums of Indo-Pacific sea life. Discover species like the long-snouted seahorse, the Moorish idol, the Green moray, the Eagle ray, the loggerhead turtle and the grey seal.
City of the Ocean
This popular Biarritz theme park is a fun and educational science centre that young and old will love. Together with the Biarritz aquarium, it makes up the Biarritz Ocean centre. City of the Ocean is an interactive learning experience featuring activities, workshops and exhibitions. Different spaces teach families all about the ocean as the visit unfolds.
