Bordeaux continues to produce the most popular fine wines in the world, even amid the rise of other French wine regions. Some of the most prestigious productions are much sought after, such as Pauillac, Margaux, Haut-Brion, Pomerol, Sauternes, Saint-Julien, and Saint-Estèphe which you will be able to taste during a wine tour, and are considered a valued part of France’s identity.

Bordeaux is not only the capital of wine, but also a historic city brimming with sights to see and stories from the past. With over 350 historical monuments, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007 and has preserved its beautiful 18th-century architecture. Visit Place de la Bourse with its mirror pool, Saint-André cathedral and its separate bell tower, Pey-Berland tower, the National Opera, Saint-Michel basilica, Place des Quinconces, rue Sainte-Catherine (the longest pedestrian street in Europe), and the many museums. Another must of course, is the Cité du Vin. In a building designed to resemble wine being swilled in a glass, wine lovers will enjoy learning about the history of wine around the world.
Bordeaux is surrounded by villages which trace the region’s history and whose wines are named after them. Visit Saint-Émilion, the citadel village of Blaye, Bourg and its two upper and lower towns, and Cadillac which has the castle of the Dukes of Epernon de Cadillac. Cross the river to the left bank to see Margaux and its pretty 18th-century castle which can be visited if you book in advance.
You will inevitably come across these villages on the five Bordeaux wine routes: the castle route, the hillside route, the heritage route, the bastide route and the Graves route. The Bordeaux wine region covers 117,000 hectares and has 57 appellations. The best way to learn about the grape varieties grown here and taste the local wines is to visit the wine estates directly. The concierge at Pure Wine Retreat will be happy to arrange a tour of the vineyards to suit your tastes and your level of knowledge, from tasting sessions to full-blown wine courses. The town of Cognac is about 100 km away and also boasts internationally renowned wines which are exported to 150 countries.
Leave the vineyards for the day and head to the chic seaside resort of Cap Ferret and Arcachon Bay, which are just 100 km away. The focus here is on oysters, as it the France’s biggest oyster farming region. Arcachon Bay and Cap-Ferret are increasingly popular destinations for their oysters, beaches, nature reserves, and the fishing villages dotted with colourful houses. Surf, take a bike ride through the forest, or laze on the beaches of the Bay, and don't forget to climb the highest dune in Europe, the Dune Du Pilat. Breathtaking views are assured at the top, followed by an adrenaline rush as you run back down. Then end the day taking in the sunset with a plate of fresh oysters and a chilled white wine.
This holiday home is ideally located for day trips to the Dordogne, the Basque Country and to the Spanish border, all of which are packed with character and beautiful scenery.
