The Côte d'Azur has many faces. Famous for its glam beaches, casinos and picturesque villages, its lesser-known inland forest spots enjoy peacefulness, pure air and nothing but the sound of crickets among the trees. Make the most of this breathtakingly beautiful region by hiking in the Massif des Maures hills, strolling along the coast or soaking up the lively beach vibe and translucent waters of Saint Tropez.
Saint-Tropez: this coastal town needs no introduction, after becoming a hotspot for jet-setting A-listers such as Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s. The former fishing village has lost none of its authentic charm – see its 17th-century citadel, which now houses the Maritime History Museum. Film buffs will enjoy the Film Museum, or you can simply spend the day browsing the elegant boutiques or enjoying an ice cream and watching the world go by.
Saint-Tropez is also popular for its markets:
- Place des Lices: weekly market every Tuesday and Saturday morning throughout the year
- The fish market in the newly renovated market hall : pick up some freshly caught sea bream, red mullet, scorpion fish or octopus, then take it home for a meal on the terrace.
- The Place aux Herbes market: fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese, wine – all the delicious wares you’d expect to find at a French market!
Head to the beach to relax and cool down. Whether you opt to hire a lounger at a private beach such as Plage de Bouillabaisse, or place your towel on a public stretch, you’ll enjoy the same fine white sand and clear waters.
Sainte-Maxime: a seaside resort where life is good. Stroll around the port for a spot of yacht watching, then settle down on the fine sands of La Nartelle beach to relax. Top tip – take the 15-minute shuttle boat from Sainte-Maxime to Saint-Tropez to beat the summer traffic jams.
The idyllic villages of Grimaud, Ramatuelle and Gassin. These three hilltop villages are a must for their medieval cobbled streets, colourful windows and panoramic views. Grimaud also has a pretty sister village at sea-level which is built on water – don’t leave without visiting Port Grimaud.
Away from the coast, the Côte d'Azur hinterland is full of scenic surprises and colourful landscapes. Hike through the Maures massif, with its well-preserved flora and fauna (weasels, foxes, squirrels, wild boar).
The Maures plain, a Natura 2000 listed natural site, is bursting with natural colour, with its shades of green from the pine trees, and blues that mingle with the ochre rocks. As the seasons change, so do the colours and the scenery. Streams and rivers keep the vegetation lush and hikers cool.
The 6.2 kilometres trail starting near Lac des Escarcets is a great way to experience the scenery.
With water sports aplenty on offer, there’s something for everyone: stand-up paddle boarding, jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkelling, or you might get to see a sailing regatta.
Or try something new – take to the sea in a Polynesian pirogue to discover the Cap Camarat and Cap Taillat headlands.
